Often when football players are asked to go to the bench the following minutes are full of long faces and mutterings but this week was different as was the bench.
Family, friends and former work colleagues have worked together to organise a wooden bench with engraved plaque which has been placed at Hotspur Park, the home of Alnmouth FC where Stephen played much of his football, and several of those involved were able to be present for the unveiling with the Northumberland Gazette in attendance to record the moment.
The winners of The Stephen Carey Memorial Shield 2013 extended their glory this evening as their photo featuring Sir John Hall was included within the Grassroots section of the Newcastle Chronicle:
Daniel Carey was featured in The Journal today talking about his brother Stephen, the work the fund is doing and our plans for the future.

A series of articles were published in the Northumberland Gazette today which included details of the coroners report which whilst incredibly sad to read at least bring something resembling an answer for this tragic incident.
In addition the publication also included a piece announcing the formation of the very fund you are now reading, The Stephen Carey Fund.
Following many discussions between teammates, friends and family close to Stephen as to how best remember and honour him it was agreed to do something positive and constructive to help others.
With a football match already undertaken the formation of the fund now draws together the determination of those involved into sharp focus and with ideas in abundance 2013 looks like being a year of promise and hope for all those affected by this tragic event.
