Stephen Carey was a 21 year man who tragically collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart defect whilst playing football for his village side.
Stephen, who worked in food store Iceland in Alnwick, was playing for Alnmouth FC in a pre-season friendly when he fell to the ground halfway through a match at Warkworth in Northumberland on Thursday 12th July 2012.
Fellow players and spectators rushed to help the 21-year-old and desperate attempts were made to resuscitate him before an ambulance arrived. Stephen was taken to hospital but nothing could be done to save him.
Stephen Carey, who lived in the village of Alnmouth, left behind his mother Joy Bowman, brothers Daniel and James, sister Mairi, step-father Chris Bowman, and girlfriend Nikki Kim.
Stephen’s mum, Joy Bowman, described Stephen as her “wonderful son”. She said: “He was such a lovable lad, he was so caring and loyal, he had the most amazing eyes which sparkled and he always had a big smile on his face. He was loved by everyone who knew him and he lifted everyone’s spirits”.
