Shilbottle Shows Its Community Spirit

A host of locals showed what working together can achieve in aid of worthy causes in recent days as two fundraising events are hailed a success.

The first, a football match arranged by the committee of The Stephen Carey Fund in association with Shilbottle Colliery Welfare FC pitted the “Young’uns” against the “Old’uns”.

As expected the youngsters, wearing the traditional green of Shilbottle, came flying out of the blocks and took an early lead which didn’t bode well for the “more senior” opposition, who were clad in blue and white.  By half time the score was 5-3 to the Young’uns but the Old’uns had begun to show signs that they weren’t out of the match just yet.

Sure enough the Old’uns proved that tactics and determination are the equal of raw strength and agility and pulled level mid way through the second half.  The youngsters having now lost their composure could only watch as their more senior counterparts creaked past them and won the match with the scoreline standing at 10-7 at the final whistle.

The Distorted
The Distorted

Later that evening two local bands, The Distorted and NE66, took to the stage to entertain the masses at The Farriers Arms.  The bar reverberated with the sounds of live music, there was dancing, animated chat and perhaps just a few drinks flowing.  Come closing time everyone left with a big smile in the knowledge they had enjoyed a great evening.

The tally the next morning stood at £740 which will be split equally between The Stephen Carey Fund and the family of Aidan Jackowiak.

A huge thank you to all the players and officials who took part in the football match and Shilbottle Working Mens Club for the post match reception, a massive thank you to The Distorted and NE66 for taking the time to perform completely free of charge, thanks to Liz Wallace of The Farriers Arms for hosting us and last but not least thanks to you all for turning out and supporting both events.
